Ole, ole la vuelta al cole

BACK TO SCHOOL

Bilingual version

Queridos amigos:

After almost one month of wonderful experiences, new friends, quite absurd situations, almost finishing all the butter jars in the buffet breakfasts and lots of fun with my mother, now she is back in God-Bless-Europe and I am in the USTB again. During the next weeks I will be telling you about our travels around some of the most beautiful places in China, namely, Hangzhou, Guilin, Shanghai, Beijing, Pingyao, Datong, etc. But before getting started with these chronicles, I would like to share with you the latests news from my university and the great mess they organized for me as farewell gift. There we go...

Most of you probably will know that I have spent the whole summer working in Beijing, trying to earn some money to pay for a single room in my hall of residence. Well, in the end I was supposed to move to the room 1609, just few steps away from my room that time, 1612. The occupant of the room had already announced he was leaving the place and, besides, he had the last 6 months' rent overdue. So the thing looked like something already done. Anyway, the girls in charge of assigning the rooms asked me to wait for some time, for the occupant of the aforementioned room was not around and he still had all his belongings inside the room. So I waited from June to late August, but in the meantime I paid the full rent for the next 4 months (that is, 12000 yuan).

Chanchulleitor.

Something funny happened with the receipt of my payment, though. Apparently, paying the rent in advance does not mean you are making a reservation (Good Lord! No!) so, since that guy from Morocco was still kind of living in the room, they could NOT put in writing that I was paying for a room that was not, in a strict sense, unoccupied. So, instead writing I was paying 100 yuan/day for a single room untill the end of December, they wrote I was paying 50 yuan/day for a shared room untill middle April. Chinese: legally yours since 5000 BC. In the end I agreed to this, because in one year living in China I have gotten to know the Chinese mind and I knew the only chance I had to get what I wanted was showing them a huge bunch of bucks.

¿¿¿HOLA???

They could not give me my room because there was stuff inside; they could not move that stuff to a storage room; so, since I was leaving on vacation very soon, I asked them not to assign me any new roommate untill my return, because I had valuable stuff and money I did not want to carry with me during the trip and I needed a safe place to leave it. And, what did they do? Exactly the opposite. The day I picked up my mom at the airport and went to the university to have a rest and pack the things, we found a girl from Algeria opening the door of my room with her brand new key. IN YOUR FACE.

And you know what follows: Fight.

I went downstairs to have a conversation with these assholedized ladies and the building manager and, after more than half an hour of argument, the conclusion was that they could not take out the things of that Moroccan guy because he was in Morocco, and they also could not give that Algerian girl another room, so if I wanted my things safe IT WAS ME the one that should move them in the storage room, or alternatively give them to a friend to keep them inside his/her room. ME. The one who had already paid the rent. Not the debtor's things. MINE. Long live the Chinese logic. One of them even got to say I haven't paid for the single room at all. What else?

¿Eh? ¿Tonta?

So in the end, my friend Diljeet, together with my poor mum, came downstairs to help me, trying to make us cool down in his Mahatma Gandhi style, while I was ranting and raving in Chinese. I had to inform on the actual whereabouts of that Moroccan guy, thought to be in Morocco, far away and defenseless, but actually being in Beijing, living an idyllic summer life with his girlfriend. Tra-laaa! So what happened in the end was that the Moroccan guy finally appeared, said he was not leaving the room and that he would pay soon and, consequently, all my stuff ended piled up inside the poor Diljeet's room. The manager promised they would give me the single room in the 6thfloor in a matter of two days, so Diljeet could move my stuff there.

El dormitorio-almacén de Diljeet. Vaya tela...

Claramente, no estoy asistiendo a clase.

Ten days later, when I came back to University to drop some things and have a look to my new room, they haven't arranged the thing yet, and Diljeet was still living in that kind of warehouse his room had become.

So, you know what folows: Fight.

This time, my mother's expression (that doesn't need translation in any language) made the miracle. In two hours, we were moving my things to the 6th floor, to room 609, where I currently live. The room was dusty and dirty, with empty bottles scattered all over the filthy floor. We didn't have much time before resuming our trip, so we piled my things in there and we left. Next week, I would find out that Diljeet had cleaned up most of the mess for me as a welcome gift. Absolutely lovable.

Now I am still arranging the room, doing some McGiver tasks and changing the pieces of fUrniture from here to there. The first thing I did was cleaning the windows to avoid allergic episodes patronized by ventilation. Out of the window tracks I took everything, even (and God knows why) snails. True story.

Prometido.

I am quite tired of this university. They don't do the things the way they must be done, no matter how much you pay them. It is really discouraging. And this, my friends, was the beginning of our trip. I will start telling you about our experience in Xi'an in the incoming days. See you!
